What do you do when push comes to shove in the checkout line? Since I've been couponing, this has happened on numerous occasions, and I've quickly learned the old saying "the customer is always right" is merely just that, a saying.
This past Wednesday evening, I went shopping at three different retailers, and I ran into trouble redeeming my coupons at two of them. I carefully match up my coupons to my purchases when I shop, and one of my biggest gripes and groans of couponing is the lack of understanding at retailers of coupon verbiage. I am usually a laid back shopper, but recently at the Target by my home I've had a few employees who come running to scrutinize my every coupon any time they see me and my coupons hit the register. It's frustrating for me because I honestly feel they single me out because of the quantity of coupons I use and the amount of products I can leave the store with for a very small out of pocket. In the past year of couponing I've seen a wide spectrum of reactions to my coupons in the check out lane. From the disgruntled customer behind you because your coupons are taking far too long to scan, to the wowed customer and/or cashier who admiringly watches as your total plummets, to the negative Nancy who is certain this is not right because you certainly can not get something for free! When scrutinized I try to remain calm but my frustrations are running high and patience low with what has been happening at Target. While I don't want to get into the nitty gritty details as I'm currently in contact with their corporate office trying to remedy the situation, I'm curious as to what you do when all eyes are on you for the use of coupons. Do you stand your ground or go quietly just to escape the situation as quickly as possible? Do you follow-up with the store manager, customer service or corporate offices? I'd love to hear stories about your personal experiences; you know the good, the bad and even the down right ugly.
